Garage Organization Ideas

If you’re sick of seeing the clutter piling up in your garage, then it may be time to finally take the plunge on one of most homeowners’ most dreaded projects: organizing the garage. Check out these garage organization ideas that will make the decluttering process easy – and maybe even fun!

Sure, at first it might seem overwhelming (after all, most of us use our garages as a catch-all for every odd and end that just doesn’t seem to fit anywhere else) but with the right game plan and some bright ideas, you’ll have a place for everything—including your car—in the span of a weekend or less.

Here are some of our favorite garage organization ideas to get you started!

Come Up with an Organization System

First, you’ll need a rough idea of what should go where. What do you normally store in your garage? What do you want to use the space for? You’ll most likely want space for your car, but this is the perfect time to map out how you’ll use the space around the car.

You may want to keep all of your gardening and landscaping supplies together, for instance, or designate a space for bikes and scooters.

If you use your garage as a workspace, where will that go and what do you want that to entail? Do you have a refrigerator or laundry machines out there? How would you like those areas organized?

You can even go so far as to map out your space and sketch a floor plan of what you would like the finished product to look like.

Get the Right Supplies

It doesn’t matter how many great garage organization ideas you have, if you don’t have the right tools by your side. Head to your local organizational supply, home improvement, or department store to stock up on low-cost supplies like:

  • Clear plastic bins
  • Shelves
  • Label maker
  • GearWall
  • Wall Hooks
  • Pegboards
  • Storage rail systems
  • Work benches
  • Small parts organization systems

Of course, you can always splurge and invest in one of the heavy-duty, multi-part storage systems available at stores like Lowes and Home Depot, but you don’t have to spend big to stay organized.

Rent a Dumpster

Front Load DumpsterDepending on the amount of stuff that’s taking up space in your garage, you may be overwhelmed by just how much you find you are ready to part with. For all that clutter, it’s smart to invest in a roll-off dumpster rental. If you’re in the Raleigh area, Wall Recycling’s options for residential dumpster rental are convenient and can be the perfect option when decluttering your garage.

We can deliver them straight to you, and once you’ve filled them up, Wall Recycling can come haul them away, so you don’t have to deal any of the heavy lifting.

Enlist Help

This may just be the best garage organization idea we can give you: don’t go it alone.

Sure, you can try, but a solo garage clean up is likely to take a lot longer than just one weekend. If you want to get it done more quickly and have a little fun, gather some friends and family and have a little decluttering party. Make sure you have drinks, food, even music to keep the mood up and keep your team going.

Create Piles

Here comes the part you may have been dreading: It’s time to get down to business and get your hands dirty—figuratively and literally. As any loyal HGTV viewer can tell you, the easiest way to do this is by breaking it down into piles:

  • What to keep;
  • What to donate;
  • What to throw away;
  • What to sell;

Once you know what you’re keeping, you’ll have to build out more piles based on how you want to sort your items to best fit in your new setup. Figure out if you want all of your tools in one area, sports equipment in another, and lawn care items in another.

When you’ve decided how you want to segment your items, group them together in a filing system, clear bins, shelving, or a storage cabinet.

Label Your Bins

One of our favorite garage organization ideas is to create an inventory of your items as you put things away. Label the stored items on the outside of each bin. Or, use a scannable QR code so you can easily see what’s inside!
