Will Renting a Dumpster Damage My Driveway?

Residential driveway that has not been affected by dumpster rental in raleigh NC

If you’re about to take on a home renovation project, tear down an outbuilding, or declutter your home, renting a dumpster is a smart investment. However, most homeowners worry that the weight of a dumpster can damage their driveway. Our North Carolina dumpster rental company is sharing a few tips that will protect your property and prevent any cracking or other damage a dumpster may cause.

Preventing Driveway Damage from a Dumpster

Roll-off containers, like dumpsters, can crack a concrete or asphalt driveway, but only if proper precautions aren’t taken by both the homeowner and the dumpster rental provider. In fact, the risk to your driveway is incredibly low even if no safeguards are taken. However, you can ensure the best protection with these tips:

Put Plywood Under the Dumpster

Some dumpster rentals do this automatically, but if they don’t just ask. Using boards, a few old pallets or a sheet of plywood beneath the metal feet of the dumpster will add a bit of cushioning and provide the best protection to your driveway.

Don’t Overfill the Dumpster

Make sure the size dumpster you choose is the right fit for your needs and you don’t overfill it. Going over the recommended fill-height can add literal tons of weight that is concentrated into a smaller space as compared to using a large dumpster where the weight is dispersed. Even if the dumpster itself doesn’t crack and dig into the driveway while it’s sitting, picking up an overly heavy bin can also cause damage.

Try to Place the Dumpster in the Shade

If you’re doing work in the summer and you have an asphalt driveway, try and position the dumpster in the shade. Hot sun beating down on the asphalt can soften it slightly, which isn’t a big deal, typically, but the extreme weight of a dumpster on soft asphalt can sometimes leave impressions.
